UBC Wins Saint Martin's Invitational, SFU Second And UVic Fourth

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men's golf team began the 2015-16 season on a winning note, claiming first place at the Saint Martin's University Men's Invitational, which ended Saturday in Olympia, Wash.

The Thunderbirds recorded a three-round score of 4-over par 856 (287-276-293), six shots ahead of Simon Fraser and 10 ahead of Dixie State (Utah) while the University of Victoria Vikes finished in 4th spot.

The event was played on a hilly and tree-lined par 71, 6,240-yard layout at the Olympia Country & Golf Club.

Simon Fraser’s Chris Crisologo took the individual title at 7-under par, 6 shots ahead of Montana’s Connor Miele and Western Washington’s Brett Johnson. One shot further back at even par and in 4th alone was UVic’s Lawren Rowe.

Junior Jack Wood (Banff, Alta.) was the highest-finishing T-Bird on the individual leaderboard. He tied for fifth with a final score of 1-over 214, eight strokes off the lead. Wood shot a 1-over 72 in the opening round before capping off his tournament with back-to-back even-par 71's on Friday and Saturday.

Trent Abraham (Hamilton, Ont.) had a strong start to his second season of university golf, placing 10th at 3-over 216. On the first day, Abraham opened with a 2-over 73 before firing a sizzling 5-under 66. He concluded the tournament with a round of 6-over 77 on Saturday.

All three remaining Thunderbirds tied for 12th place at 5-over 218. Nate Ollis (Victoria, B.C.) carded a 1-over 72 on Saturday after rounds of 70 (-1) and 76 (+5) on Friday.

Rookie Andrew Harrison (Camrose, Alta.), the reigning Alberta junior boys champion, opened with a 1-over 72 before finishing two rounds of 2-over 73.

Another rookie, Zaahidali Nathu (Vancouver) signed for rounds of 75 (+4) and 66 (-5) on Day 1 before concluding with a 6-over 77.

The team will now travel north to Bellingham, Wash., for the Western Washington Invitational, which will run Sept. 21-22.
