The best 16-and-under golfers are at Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club this week and after one round, it’s Hannah Lee of Surrey for the girls and Callum Davison of Cowichan for the boys who are topping the leaderboard.

On a beautiful sunny opening round of the 54-hole tournament, eight boys broke par and two girls did likewise.

JUVENILE GIRLS

Lee entered this tournament with the best form, having won the Canadian Juvenile Girls title and the girls’ title at the Western Canadian Summer Games that just ended on Sunday.

Lee continued on her hot streak by making birdies on six of her first 10 holes at Spallumcheen before giving three strokes back to finish at (-3) 68 on the par-71 track. “It was a tough way to finish, but it’s still good to finish under par,” said Lee.

“I’m so tired from all the golf. We didn’t get into (the Interior) until 1:30 a.m. Monday. I played my practice round to see the course, but I am really looking forward to some time off.” Lee leads Jessica Wu of Langley by one stroke, as the Wolfpack player carded a (-2) 69.

Sitting T3 at even par 71 are a trio of girls, Lee’s good friend and Team BC colleague Alisha Lau; Natalie Chu of Marine Drive and Amanda Minni of Beach Grove.

Lee’s opponents are probably saying the same thing, as the Lab @ Northview golfer is making the game look too easy. “She’s playing so well because she’s worked so hard this summer,” said Lau, Lee’s teammate on the victorious BC team in Wood Buffalo, AB. “She’s earned everything and even though we’re competitors on the course, we’re friends first. I’m pretty happy for her.”

Lau wishes her game was better, but she knows the game is about ups and downs. “I had a great year last year and it’s been a bit more of a struggle this year,” said the Team Canada Development Squad member. “I have to keep working on my game, get my tempo on my putting better.”

JUVENILE BOYS

Davison, who finished third at the BC Junior Boys earlier this summer, made six birdies and only two bogeys on the day for his (-4) round of 67. “I got off to a good start and kept it going,” said the 15-year-old. “I hit a lot of greens, I think I missed only 2, and I made some putts.”

Davison, who plays cross-handed, said the tournament is only one round old and there’s a long way to go. “I feel like I’m hitting the ball really well so I need to continue to do that for the next two days,” said Davison. “I think if I can get to (-10) for the tournament, that would be really good.

Keaton Gudz of Royal Colwood and Tristan Mandur of Arbutus Ridge sit T2, just one stroke behind Davison, while a group that includes Thomas Verigin, Jaewook Lee and Andrew Spalti sits another stroke back. “I’ve had an up-and-down summer and this round puts me right in the mix,” said Gudz. “I need to play my own game, stay consistent and stay patient.”

BEST BALL

In the best ball competition, Keaton Gudz and Tristan Mandur shot a (-10) round of 61 and lead four teams who sit at (-6) 65.

ZONE CHAMPIONSHIP

In the Zone Championship, the Zone 3 Fraer Valley Team of Khan Lee, AJ Ewart, Mitchell Thiessen and Isaac Lee sit at even par 213, two strokes ahead of the Zone 6 team of Callum Davison, Aidan Goodfellow, Jeremiah Morris and Johnny Dial.
